Tehran is the capital of Iran and the largest city in terms of area and population (about 8.5 million people).It is located in the south of Alborz mountain range, and is surrounded by the plains of Varamin and Shahriar, and from south in the city of Ray. The city is considered to be among the 30 largest cities in terms of area and population and is ranked among the cheapest cities in the world for the cost of living. Geographically, Tehran is one of the world’s highest cities. North of Tehran is the base of a mountain that has an altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level, and in the south it is at least 1,100 meters high. Tehran was named the Iranian capital in 1788 by Mohammad Khan Qajar (the founder of the Qajar dynasty, the 7th King), which became subject to modern structural changes with the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi in the 1920s. Tehran currently has a wide range of highways and rail transport including 7 active subway lines, and 4 lines being launched. The city symbol of Tehran is the Milad and Azadi Towers, and it has a combination of modern and old buildings.
